Loren Hutto invited to the MLB Female Trailerblazer Series training camp

Loren Hutto (Storm Gray 12U) was once again chosen as one of 96 (aged 12-13) female players, from all 50 states, to be invited to the MLB Female Trailblazer Series training camp at their Vero Beach Facility April 13-16th this year.  For the 2nd year in a row, she was the only player selected from DC.  And, Loren is the only two-time invitee among the six players ever selected from the DMV region!

The Trailblazer Series is a joint effort of MLB and USA Baseball designed to provide playing, development, and educational opportunities to female baseball players ages 12-13. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from current and former Women's National Team players and coaching staff, baseball industry executives and other dignitaries from in and around the sport.  Last year Mo'ne Davis (Little League championship legacy and record setter) and Kelsie Whitmore (first female MiLB player - Staten Island Ferry Hawks) were part of the coaching squad.

Since joining Storm last season, Loren has been a key contributor on Storm Gray at the plate (.411 BA), on the mound (3.80 ERA over 24 IP), and in the field (playing all IF positions + C).  Please join us in congratulating Loren on her amazing accomplishment!!!

THANK YOU, AARON SACKS

Aaron Sacks recently stepped down as the Director of Arlington Storm Baseball after serving in that role for more than four years. Aaron has a long history of volunteering his time and knowledge to Arlington Babe Ruth and Arlington Storm, including coaching his two sons throughout their time playing in the program.

During Aaron's time as Storm Director he focused on adding development opportunities for both players and coaches.  For players, he added a Winter Catching Academy, Spring Development Sessions, Summer Academies, a Development Program for 7-8 YO players, and many other opportunities to get onto the baseball field.  Aaron provided numerous resources to coaches including a Coach Training Program, membership in the ABCA, a Storm Coaches resources website,  and often coach mentoring through his own on-field observations.  He fostered relationships with local high school coaches and who have offered training and clinics to both youth players and coaches in recent years.  Under Aaron's direction, the Storm program has become a regional power, and teams consistently advance to the Cal Ripken Babe Ruth (CRBR) Virginia State and Southeast Regional tournaments, with one team reaching the World Series Championship game and finishing second. Beyond the Cal Ripken trail, Storm teams consistently play competitive baseball and have had overwhelming success in numerous tournaments throughout the region.

The Arlington Storm program hosted both CRBR Virginia State Tournaments (2021 & 2022) and a Southeast Regional Tournament (2023) during Aaron's tenure — huge undertakings that are great opportunities to highlight the Arlington Storm program across CRBR.  Even as Aaron's time as Director was coming to an end at the time of the Southeast Regional Tournament, he attended every game and could be found offering his expertise as a volunteer in many roles, especially helping out in the pressbox.

Aaron's duties as Director included helping to maximize the use of fields and practice spaces throughout Arlington County. Aaron also was instrumental in working to get ABR and Storm teams back to baseball in the summer of 2020 following the shutdown due to COVID. He worked with the county to open fields and developed plans and protocols to keep players safe. Even after all of the program's successes and highlights under Aaron's leadership, he thinks his most important impact has been helping an increasing number of players journey on a path to success at the next level.

The entire ABR and Arlington Storm baseball family says "THANK YOU" to Aaron for his leadership! And WELCOME to Lisa Donnelly who will follow him as Storm Director.

8YO OFF TO A STRONG START FOR 2021

Above: Our 2020 8YO squad's tryouts were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, once teams formed, their season immediately launched full swing, and they were off and running. Teams won championships in Arlington, VA, and Elkridge, MD, as well as placed second in Ellicott City, MD. They won silver at the USSSA Maryland State Championship and in the 1st annual NOVA Halloween Bash in Arlington, VA. What a start as Storm Baseball players!

Storm is excited to announce that we have now formed our 2021 8YO team! Welcome to the program, ballplayers!

IT ALL BEGINS WITH HARD WORK

10YO-12YO STORM PLAYERS — KEEP GRINDING IN WINTER 2021
WITH CONDITIONING WORKOUTS!

Storm Baseball’s 10YO-12YO ballplayer keep active even during the cold winter months by participating in a sports performance program. This is a team-based, physical conditioning element of our baseball development. The conditioning workouts challenge every player with intensity and reward them with fun. Our goal is to provide safe and structured workouts to achieve peak conditioning, learn good techniques and habits, and maximize performance on the baseball field.

  • INCREASE SPEED & AGILITY.
  • BOOST FLEXIBILITY & EXPLOSION.
  • WORK ON FOOTWORK, BALANCE & STABILITY.
  • BUILD CORE STRENGTH, ARM STRENGTH & CONFIDENCE.
  • DEVELOP A PROPER PREGAME WARM-UP.
The program is led by Storm Baseball Coach Shanan Knox. Coach Knox was a two-time All American in high school and a member of Team USA Baseball, a four-year starter at The University of Maine, a starter in the prestigious Cape Cod League and was recently elected to the Greater Boston InterCity League Hall of Fame. Coach Knox is a National Association of Sports Medicine certified trainer with years of experience training athletes of all ages. Coach Knox has served as an assistant coach for the Storm and a hitting coach for many other Storm Baseball programs.

This program is a great opportunity to spend offseason time with your teammates. It is highly encouraged, but optional.

2020

2020 Summer was a Season to Remember

Baseball's 2020 launch was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, Storm leaders worked to get the ballplayers back on the field. Once the Storm players took the field, they found success. It looked a different from years past with social distancing measures and waves of the hat instead of high-fives. But, Storm players adapted, practiced and played responsibly, and thrived with their teammates. Some of Storm's 2020 titles:

  • 11U NVTBL Metro Division Champions at 9-1

9YO Storm Black Wins 2019 VA State Tournament

Picture
Becoming 9YO Virginia State Champions took grit. The 9YO Storm Black team won its first game but lost its second in the Virginia State Tournament. However, after five straight wins and climbing out of the loser's bracket they became Virginia State Champions.

In the final game, the score was 8-7 in the sixth inning. Arlington's opponent Gainesville had the lead until Storm scored two runs. Harrison N. had the two-out game-winning RBI single. B. Lawson was selected as the tournament MVP.

This win qualified the team to compete in the Southeast Regional Tournament in Stafford, VA.

2019 STORM BASEBALL IN THE NEWS

From left to right: 9YO Storm Black, 10YO Storm Black, and 11YO Storm Black.

Three Storm teams won their age-level District 7 championships and qualified to compete at the Virginia Babe Ruth State Tournament. 9YO Storm Black and 11YO Storm Black competed in Districts in Alexandria, VA. 10YO Storm Black hosted their age-level's District Tournament in Arlington at Barcroft Park. All three teams are repeat winners — having won their age-level District Tournaments last in 2018, too.

9YO, 10YO & 11YO Storm Black Teams are 2019 District 7 Champions

2018 was a year of successes for the Storm Baseball Program.

The  8, 9, 10 and 11-year-old Storm Black teams all won their brackets over the Memorial Day weekend at the Showdown In the Valley tournament in Winchester, VA. The clean sweep by the league was a first for the Storm Baseball travel program. It was also a first for the tournament — no program had won at all age levels in the past.

In the same week, four Storm Black teams took first-place in the Virginia District 7 tournaments, while the 11YO Storm Red were champions at the Father's Day Summer Classic in Essex, Maryland. The 11Y0, 10Y0, 9YO and 8YO Storm Black all advanced to compete in their age level State Tournaments.

Columbus Day weekend was filled with success for Storm Baseball teams competing in multiple tournaments in different states. But, it was 10YO Storm Black and 9YO Storm Black who had championship wins right here in Arlington, Virginia. 11YO Storm Black, 10YO Storm Black, 10YO Storm Red, 9YO Storm Black and 9YO Storm Red all competed in The Sam Fox Fall Classic hosted by Arlington Travel Baseball at Barcroft Park. 10YO Storm Black was undefeated through pool play and entered bracket play the number 1 seed. They continued their winning streak in bracket play and won the championship game against the host Arlington Arsenal (ATB) 10U. The 9YO Storm Black faced the Aldie Senators — a team they had lost to in pool play — in the final game of the tournament. Storm Black's 9YO team won against the number 1 seed and took first place.

The 11YO Storm Red earned second-place at the Fruitland (MD) Columbus Day Blowout tournament. The 12YO Storm Black competed in Ripken Baseball's Aberdeen (MD) Tournament.

8YO Storm Black competed in the Southeast Regional Tournament in Ocala, Florida. The team was undefeated throughout the 8YO Virginia State Tournament in Haymarket, VA. During the State Tournament championship game against the Fluvanna Fire, Storm had a 9-run lead in the fourth inning. Fluvanna fought back, but we held on and won 13-12.
